Changing levels in this new, single family residence elaborate the sloping terrain of its corner lot in the Boston suburb. The finished floor creates a spiral sequence beginning in the garage and ending in the sleeping quarters. The 4500-square-foot house occupies a small site bounded by deep setbacks while keeping a humble facade to the street and encircling a private courtyard. A single folding roof unites the spaces. Siting takes advantage of southwestern light, bathing the house’s central courtyard in warmth. Uniting the domestic spaces, the courtyard also provides an access point to the rest of the neighborhood. The family entertains guests in a choreographed and contained realm, a formal sequence apart from the intimate private domain. The folding roofscape echoes dynamic interior spaces ranging from lofty and public to low and personal. |
