This single-family residence sits on a spectacular site at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Two wings of the house block harsh northwestern winds and invite sunlight from the south, bracketing a domestic oasis in the desert. The north wing houses work-related programs including a yoga studio, woodshop and a greenhouse angled for optimal angle of sun exposure. The south wing connects domestic spaces along a curve, allowing each room a slightly different vista. Elevated bedrooms look east towards the mountains, affording both privacy and panorama. The building's structure and insulation derives from an Insulating Concrete Form system, a rapid and energy-efficient solution suited to the brevity of Colorado's building season. A cladding of corrugated weathering-steel records the effects of natural processes over time. The following drawings outline the first phase of construction including the foundation, north wing, and entry space. |
